In addition, Baltimore City residents may order an HIV self-testing kit. What tests to order and what body sites you want us to test are your decisions, but we have some guidance to help you decide what may be best for you.
How do you know which body sites to test for STIs?
Knowing what to test is easy! Whatever parts of your body (your throat, your vagina, your penis, or your butt) come into contact with someone else’s genitals should be swabbed and tested. Remember – using a sex toy also counts as contact. Here is more information to help you decide:
Have you given oral sex in the past 3 months? | This means that you have given someone a blow job, have given someone head, or have gone down on someone. | Then order a Throat Swab |
Have you received oral sex in the past 3 months? | This means that someone has given you a blow job, has given you head, or has gone down on you. | Then order a Penis Swab or a Vagina Swab |
Have you received vaginal sex in the past 3 months? | This means that someone put their penis or their sex toys in your vagina. | Then order a Vagina Swab |
Have you received anal sex in the last 3 months? | This means that someone put their penis or their sex toys in your butt. | The order a Butt Swab (rectal swab) |
Have you given vaginal and/or anal sex in the last 3 months? | This means that you put your penis in someone else's vagina and/or someone else's butt. | Then order a Penis Swab |
If you are transgender, non-binary, or genderqueer, please pick the swab type that best suits the genitals you currently have and a throat or butt swab if you have sex with those parts of your body. Remember that you do not need to collect blood for any of the STI tests. Read about Collecting your samples.
Who should order an HIV self-test?
- Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once, as recommended by the CDC.
- If any of the STI risk factors apply to you, you should get tested for HIV routinely every 3-6 months
- Men and transwomen who have sex with other men should get tested for HIV every 3 months.
Baltimore City residents may order an HIV self-test called OraQuick, by itself or along with STI tests. OraQuick is fast, very easy to use, totally painless, and requires no blood collection. All the supplies you need come with the kit; you just need to collect some fluid from your gum line using the oral swab. Remember, this test is only reliable if it has been at least 3 months since you may have been exposed to HIV. Anyone may request an HIV self-test by visiting Native Test.
If you think you were exposed more recently:
- Consider getting an HIV blood test.
- Fast and confidential HIV blood tests are offered at low -to-no cost at many clinics and health centers.
- Find a testing location near you.
If you think you may have been exposed to HIV in the past 72 hours:
- See a healthcare provider immediately to discuss a medication that may prevent you from becoming infected with HIV called PEP (post exposure prophylaxis).
If your HIV test is positive:
- Medications are widely available to keep you healthy and prevent further transmission by keeping the virus at undetectable levels.
If your HIV test is negative
- You may consider starting an effective medication for preventing HIV infection called PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).
